Touring a childcare center for the first time can feel a little like buying a house. You’re trying to take in an enormous amount of information, your emotions are running high, and you’re not entirely sure what you’re looking for. We get it. And we want to make that experience as useful and as human as possible.

So here’s an honest behind-the-scenes look at what a tour at Hill Country ELC is like — and the things we’d encourage you to notice along the way.

The best tours don’t just show you a space. They show you how the people inside it treat each other.

What to Expect When You Arrive

When you come for a tour, you won’t be handed off to an admissions coordinator. You’ll be welcomed by someone who actually works here—and quite often by Elaine personally. We want you to meet the real faces of this school, not a polished sales presentation.

We’ll walk through the classrooms, talk about our curriculum and philosophy, answer every question you have, and make sure you leave with a clear picture of what daily life looks like here. We also encourage you to bring your child if they’re old enough—seeing how they respond to the space tells you something important.

What to Look for Beyond the Furniture

It’s easy to be swayed by a beautiful classroom. New toys, bright colors, organized shelves—these things look great in photos. But we’d encourage you to look past the furniture and watch what’s actually happening. Are the children engaged? Are they calm? Do they approach the teachers comfortably? Does the room feel warm, or does it feel managed?

Watch how teachers speak to children. Do they crouch down to their level? Do they listen, or do they redirect and move on? The quality of those interactions in a five-minute window tells you more than any brochure ever could.

Questions Worth Asking

We welcome hard questions on tours. A few worth asking any childcare center you visit: What is your staff turnover rate? How do you handle conflicts between children? What does a typical drop-off look like for a child who’s struggling? How do you communicate with parents day-to-day? What happens if my child needs something that falls outside the routine?

Trust What You Feel at the Door

Pay attention to how the building feels when you walk in. Does the energy feel calm and purposeful, or hurried and institutional? Does someone greet you warmly? Your gut response in those first moments is data worth trusting. Children pick up on everything you do—and if a place feels right to you, it’s very likely to feel right to them too.
